After nine straight days of snow recently followed by heavy rains, Gary officials said several streets have been closed due to weather-related damage.
Those include portions of Clay, Harrison, Chase, Colfax and Georgia streets, along with Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
Gary Common Council President Ronald Brewer could not say how long the traffic restrictions will remain in place, but he said Thursday that police have erected barricades on the portions of the streets, and that he hopes motorists respect those barricades and don’t try to drive their cars through, or around, them.
He said a major reason that motorists should respect the barricades is because the harsh, wet weather aggravates conditions that create potholes in the roads or make existing potholes worse.
“People will wind up causing themselves more serious problems if they try to drive through these roads before we can try to patch them up,” Brewer said.
He also suggested that people who see potholes developing contact the city’s 3-1-1 responder site to report the locations so that city officials can address them properly.

Councilman Michael Protho, D-2nd, said residents can contact the city’s Public Works Department at 219-881-1311.
“We want people to let us know if they see problems,” Protho said. “It’s the only way we’ll find the problem areas.”
