St. Charles firefighters said they rescued a female resident from a fire at a downtown apartment building for seniors Thursday night.

At 10:39 p.m. Thursday, firefighters went to the six-story Caroll Tower on the 200 block of North Second Street and found a kitchen fire in a second-floor apartment, according to a news release from St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet.

Crews found a female resident who couldn’t get out of the apartment that was on fire, Schelstreet said in the release. Firefighters helped her out and took her to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva with non-life-threatening injuries, Schelstreet said. No other injuries were reported.

According to its website, Caroll Tower has 108 rental apartments for affordable senior citizen housing and is 97 percent occupied. Some residents went to the lobby during the fire, while others sheltered in place during the incident, according to the news release.

The building’s sprinkler system kept the fire to the kitchen area of the apartment and firefighters had it extinguished in about 15 minutes, according to the news release. They remained on scene until about 12:15 a.m. Friday evacuating smoke, which had spread throughout the second floor, and helping people who lived in other second-floor units back to their apartments, according to the fire department.

Fire officials said the cause of the fire was accidental, sparked by combustible materials left on a stove top. They estimated the loss at $50,000.

Geneva, Batavia and Elburn fire departments helped at the scene and the North Aurora Fire Department helped cover for St. Charles during the fire, according to the news release.
