During the month of February, many Valentine’s Day activities can be found throughout the area.
One unique offering, Sweetheart’s Dance, a Valentine’s event for children, found more than 100 attendees of all ages partying at Wicker Park Social Center in Highland. Not the usual couples-only event, children aged 1 and over joined adults for games, crafts, dancing and socializing.
“I’m here with my daughter, who didn’t get to go to the Daddy-Daughter celebration this year because her dad had to work,” said Brittney Rutledge of Highland. “He’s also working today, so this (dance) option is a good chance for us to celebrate, and she’s not so disappointed.”
Dozens of other kids and their parents joined in the fun, which was sponsored by the North Township Trustees office.
“The dancing is fun,” said Kali Parker, 8, as she showed her moves on the dance floor. “And I’m liking the hot dogs too.”
According to many of the guests, a person is never too young — or too old — to party.
“I’m seeing so many little ones with aunts, uncles or grandparents here,” said LeAnne Trayner of Munster. “It’s so enlightening that family members are enjoying each other — no matter their ages.”
Ric Cordenas of Highland brought his niece Rosalinda, 7, to the party.
“Her parents are both working a lot of hours, but they wanted her to have a fun Valentine’s experience,” he said, as he encouraged the little girl to join the others on the dance floor. “When I heard about this dance, it fit into my schedule, so here we are.”
Local disc jockey Shane Ward of Catalyst Productions in Munster provided the tunes for the celebration.
“I’ve been to many events like this … they always get the family out to have fun,” Ward said, as he checked his playlist. “It’s a great opportunity for them to bond with each other.”
In addition to showing off their dance moves, the youngsters participated in a Limbo Contest and a Hula Hoop competition.

“My kids have never seen a contest like this, they’re having an exciting time,” said Daniel King of Hammond, as he watched his two sons crouch under the Limbo stick. “It’s always a fun idea to show them new things.”
After placing first in the Limbo Contest, Laniyah Ross, 8, of Munster, proudly displayed her prizes to her new friends. “I’m glad I won, but I’m glad it’s over,” she said, with a laugh. “My back was starting to hurt.”
The North Township Trustees Office offers many activities and programs for all ages throughout the year.
