Chicago police Cmdr. Paul Bauer was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon in a stairwell outside the Thompson Center in the Loop. On Wednesday, prosecutors charged Shomari Legghette with murder in Bauer’s death.

Suspect flees police

Lower Wacker Drive and State Street

Officers working a drug mission on Lower Wacker Drive try to approach Legghette for an interview. When the officers leave their car, Legghette runs to street level.

Recorded police radio traffic captures an officer saying, “Don’t anybody get hurt. We just wanted to do a street stop on him.”

Bauer gives chase

Near Clark and Lake streets

Bauer’s car is parked near the corner of Clark and Lake streets. Bauer, who was on duty in full uniform and had been listening in on his police radio, spots Legghette and gives chase.

Bauer confronts Legghette at the top of a stairwell on the southeast side of Thompson Center. The two struggle, and Legghette falls down the stairs. Bauer either falls or follows him down the stairs to a landing below.

Police apprehend suspect, find Cmdr. Bauer

Officers from the attorney general’s office and Illinois State Police, as well as a CPD officer in civilian clothes, approach the stairwell, ordering Legghette to come out. He is placed under arrest.

According to police, Legghette is wearing body armor under his coat and has heroin, marijuana and crack cocaine in his possession, along with a “sharp object” and a gun with an extended-capacity magazine.
