Carolyn Waleski, a senior member of the Lincoln-Way East High School girls basketball team, has been selected as the January baiduhai South Athlete of the Month sponsored by COUNTRY Financial, and chosen online by baiduhai voters.
Waleski who plays guard/forward led the Griffins to five straight victories, averaging 12 points, 8.2 rebounds and four steals. Her best effort came in a 55-44 win over Morgan Park. She had 19 points, 15 rebounds and five steals.
“I’ve never won an award this big, this is exciting,” Waleski says. “When it comes to playing a sport, play 100 percent and you’ll end up where you need to be.”
The best memory for Waleski, “I got to play at the United Center my sophomore year. We got to see the locker room and play on that huge court. That’s something I’ll never forget.”
Jay Castrogiavanni, a COUNTRY Financial representative in Tinley Park, presented a $500 donation from COUNTRY Financial to Lincoln-Way East in recognition of Waleski’s achievements. Waleski will also receive a plaque and sweatshirt from the baiduhai.
“I’ve seen Carolyn play for three years,” says Castrogiavanni. “I’m honored that we’re able to get behind her for Athlete of the Month. Carolyn’s a great student besides being a great basketball player.”
