A Chicago husband and wife, both 90, were found dead after a fire in a West Garfield Park apartment early Tuesday, authorities said.
Aldonia and Lewis White were found on the second floor of a West Side two-flat in the 4000 block of West Wilcox Street shortly after the fire was reported around 3:10 a.m., according to family and fire officials. They were dead at the scene, police said.
She was a retired nurse, and he was a veteran, their family said.
“They were great, loving people,” the couple’s caretaker, Bernetta Sigler, told WGN-TV. “Mr. White, he was always cracking jokes and just being funny, loved to sing. Mrs. White, she was always strong about kids getting an education and staying off the street and just wanted everyone to just be good people. They were real good people, and it’s just sad they’re gone.”
It took firefighters about 15 minutes to put out the fire, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Michael DelGreco. No one else was injured.
There were no working smoke detectors in the home, officials said.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
