A Chicago Police Department SWAT team took one man into custody after police said he barricaded himself inside a building near the University of Illinois at Chicago’s campus Thursday night.
Police officers were called around 7:30 p.m. to the 1400 block of West Taylor Street in the University Village-Little Italy neighborhood where a male was barricaded inside a building, according to police spokeswoman Michelle Tannehill.
The man was not believed to be armed, but police blocked off the one-block stretch of Taylor Street from Laflin Street to Loomis Street while they handled the situation. That block is dotted with several restaurants and coffee shops in addition to the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame.
He was taken into custody around 9:15 p.m. without incident after talking with officers, according to police.
The scene was about a block from UIC’s West Side campus, which includes its medical and dental colleges.
At 8:30 p.m., the Chicago Fire Department dispatched a hazmat team, an ambulance and fire engine, according to Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.
