Police are searching for two carjacking suspects who robbed an off-duty Chicago police detective at gunpoint Tuesday afternoon in Bucktown, taking his Jeep, body armor and ammunition, according to law enforcement sources.

The detective, 43, was sitting in a black Jeep Grand Cherokee in the 1900 block of North Wolcott Avenue at 11:30 a.m. when two people approached and demanded the SUV at gunpoint, police said.

The carjackers, who wore overalls and hoodies, drove away west on Cortland Street, police said. The detective was not hurt.

The carjackers also got away with body armor and two loaded Smith & Wesson 9 mm magazines that were inside the Jeep, according to an alert broadcast over police radio. The carjackers were described as male teens, according to the alert.

“Officers should use extreme caution when encountering or stopping vehicle,” the alert said. “Occupants should be considered armed and dangerous.”

Chicago Police Department’s Area North detectives are investigating the carjacking.

Anyone with information is asked to call 312-744-8263.
