Riding gusty northwest winds, very cold arctic-source air reinforced the already chilly air mass in place Sunday night. Subzero temperatures 5 to 10 degrees below zero will greet us across northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana this New Year’s Day, and when combined with the northwest breeze, we will experience dangerous wind chills in the minus 20- to minus 30-degree range Monday morning.

The wind chill warnings/advisories across our area will expire at noon — temperatures rising into single digits above zero and winds letting up a little — but wind chills even in the warmest part of the day will still be in the minus 5- to minus 15-degree range. We will come very close to equaling or even bettering the coldest Jan. 1 high temperature on record here: 5 degrees, recorded back in 1969.
