Elmhurst police investigating a heroin overdose on Sunday night found 18 bags of heroin and parts of broken syringes in a sewer and near a dumpster on the grounds of a middle school, authorities said.
Police responded to a report of a 26-year-old man who had overdosed on heroin in the parking lot of a condominium complex at 841 N. York Road, the department said in a Facebook post. During the investigation, police learned that heroin packets and needles were dumped in a sewer on York Road and around a trash dumpster near Churchville Middle School.
After searching the area, police officers found the heroin bags and parts of broken syringes, the department stated. DuPage County sheriff’s K-9 dogs also conducted a search of the area and found no additional drugs or syringes, police said.
Authorities asked staff, parents and students at Churchville and adjacent Fischer Elementary School to be vigilant for suspicious items on the property, but Elmhurst police Sgt. Brendan Bruckner said Tuesday that no additional items had been reported.
The overdose was nonfatal, according to Bruckner and a spokesman from the DuPage County coroner’s office.
