A teenage boy accused of shooting and killing a schoolmate on December 11 was held without bail in Cook County court Tuesday.

Michael Palmore, 17, is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm in the death of 18-year-old Keayon Brooks.

Palmore was not arrested until Monday, a week after the shooting, according to a prosecutor’s document.

Judge Sophia Atcherson ordered Palmore held without bail after prosecutors said the shooting was captured on surveillance video and a witness had identified him to police.

Brooks, 18, of the 900 block of North Harding Avenue, died Dec. 11 next to a bus stop on the southwest corner of Division Street and Lamon Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office and police.

In the same incident, another boy, 17, was shot in the leg and ran into the nearby YCCS West school, an alternative school for students 17 to 21 that he, Palmore and Brooks all attended.

The prosecutor’s document said Palmore was captured getting into a “verbal altercation” with Brooks and pulling out a gun.

Brooks swatted at the gun and turned to run away, prosecutors said, at which point Palmore fired it multiple times. Brooks was hit twice in the buttocks and once in the back, and the 17-year-old victim was hit once in the leg. Palmore fled the scene.

Brooks was pronounced dead at 9:50 a.m. The 17-year-old was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized and he was later released.

Prosecutors said police located the distinct red 49ers jacket Palmore was wearing in the surveillance footage in an alley near the scene. A police review of his Facebook account found two photos of Palmore wearing the same jacket and holding a gun.

Palmore will appear in court again December 28.
