A 71-year-old Aurora man is in critical condition after police rescued him from his burning pickup truck following a series of crashes Tuesday night in Montgomery.
No charges appear to have been filed yet in the incident.
About 6 p.m. Tuesday, the man was involved in a hit-and-run crash near Montgomery Road and Douglas Road, Montgomery police said in a news release.
After the initial crash, which has not been further described, the man’s pickup truck, a 1998 red Dodge, turned east onto Barbara Lane and drove into the Power Car Wash, striking a kiosk and damaging the car wash structure, police said. A Montgomery police officer on patrol saw the man’s truck hit the car wash and “attempted to take (him) into custody,” according to the news release. However, Montgomery Police Chief Daniel Meyers said the officer did not initiate a pursuit.

“He heard and saw the suspect vehicle, he was in the area,” Meyers said in an email.
Police said the man kept driving recklessly, striking a post at the nearby Salvation Army building and continuing east along Barbara Lane to its dead end, where the pickup truck struck a concrete barrier.
The man’s truck kept going into a field and caught fire, police said.
Officers from Montgomery and Oswego police and the Kendall County Sheriff’s Department rescued the man as flames engulfed his vehicle, according to the news release, which states he was taken to Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora, then taken to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood in critical condition. Aurora Township Fire Department also responded to the scene.
Montgomery police said the investigation is active and are asking anyone who witnessed the crashes to call investigators at 630-897-8707, Ext. 9058.
