Aurora firefighters responded at 2:51 a.m. Sunday to the fire on the 1000 block of Rainwood Drive, according to a statement provided by Aurora Fire Department spokesman Richard T. Dahleen, a firefighter and paramedic.
Neighbors in the two-story multiunit townhome called in the fire in after their smoke detectors went off, according to the statement. The statement does not make clear whether the homeowner was awake or noticed the fire before the neighbors called it in. Dahleen said he was not given further information about that.
Neighbors also helped the homeowner evacuate, fire officials said.
Firefighters reported seeing smoke coming from the second floor of the townhome when they arrived. The first engine to get there ran a hose up into the room where the fire was, quickly putting it out, the department said. Other crews ventilated the townhome to prevent smoke and fire from spreading to other units.
Including those who arrived to help tarp and remove furnishings from the townhome, the effort involved 22 firefighters, officials said.
No injuries were reported. Fire officials estimated the damage at $100,000 and said the unit was not suitable for living. The Red Cross was called to help the homeowner with lodging and any other needs, according to the statement.
Dahleen said what the homeowner was smoking is unknown.
