Aurora firefighters recovered a cat from a fire Saturday morning on the city’s Near West Side.
No firefighters or residents were hurt, but the home on the 800 block of Roberts Street is unsuitable for living in until further repairs can be made, according to a news release from the Aurora Fire Department.
Fire officials said the cause of the mid-morning fire is under investigation.
Firefighters responded at about 8:02 a.m. Saturday after a visitor stopping by immediately noticed the kitchen was on fire, left and called 911, according to the news release. Fire officials said no one else was inside when the guest noticed the fire.
When fire crews got there, they noticed smoke showing from the back door of the single-story house. They quickly put out the flames and ventilated the home, an effort involving 12 firefighters, according to the news release.
Firefighters gave emergency care to a cat found inside.
“The homeowners cat did survive and is doing well,” fire officials stated in the news release.
Fire officials estimated the fire caused about $20,000 in damage.
