Skokie leaders are considering creating a special service area in the 3500 block of Lake Street to share costs between residents and the village for infrastructure upgrades.
Village officials said this would be one of the smallest special service areas in the village as it would impact only a few residents.
The the special service area was proposed at the Village Board meeting Monday and trustees are scheduled to take a final vote Nov. 20, village attorney Michael Lorge said.
Assuming it passes, he said, a mandated public hearing will be held Dec. 18.
Skokie Director of Engineering Erik Cook said the village was approached about the possibility of improving the block and then decided this was the best course of action to take.
“There are three residents that have access to this street section,” he said.
Cook said the village met with the three residents and created a general plan for the street section improvements. Work would include upgrades to curbs and gutters, the pavement, street drainage, as well as sidewalk replacement where necessary and more, he said.
A turning area would also be installed to allow for the safe movement of trucks at the dead end, he said.
The estimated cost of the project is $40,000, according to Cook.
“The village has proposed installing this improvement with 70 percent of the cost to the property owners and 30 percent to the village,” he said.
The cost to residents would be divided according to the assessed valuation of each property and would be included on their property tax bills for 10 years, Cook said. The village would design the project in-house, he said.
Although this special service area would mark the 10th one in Skokie, they do not occur frequently, officials said.
The last special service area — the ninth one — was created in 2009 and established joint funding of major improvements in Skokie’s East Industrial Area.
That much-larger special service area was targeted for significant improvements to the dilapidated manufacturing district on the village’s southeast side, officials said.
