Montreal Impact announced French manager Rémi Garde as its new head coach and director of player personnel.

Garde, 51, signed a three-year deal to be the fifth coach in the history of the Canadian MLS franchise, the club announced Wednesday.

“We are very happy and proud that Rémi Garde is joining the Montreal Impact,” said Montreal Impact president Joey Saputo. “As player, assistant coach and head coach, he excelled by demonstrating his qualities as a leader and his knowledge of the game. His vision and his experience, also in the development of young players, will allow us to continue to improve our methods and work process at the Academy. It really is a fresh start on many levels.”

Garde joins Montreal after a year without out of coaching, having last managed Aston Villa in the 2015-2016 season, and French side Lyon from 2011 to 2014. He led Lyon to a French Cup title and a French Champions’ Trophy in 2012.

Montreal failed to reach the playoffs in 2017 after reaching the Eastern Conference Finals in 2016.
