Atlanta United midfielder Julian Gressel was named as the 2017 Rookie of the Year in MLS, the league announced Wednesday.
Gressel, 23, received an average of 53 percent between players, clubs, and media votes, beating out Minnesota United’s Abu Danladi and Phildelphia Union’s Jack Elliot.
The German finished the 2017 season with the third-most assists in MLS history by a rookie with nine, along with five goals in 32 appearances, 24 of which were starts.
Gressel was the eight overall selection in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft, acquiring him from Orlando City SC in exchange for 2016 MLS Expansion Draft selecion Donny Toia.
