The principal of Valparaiso High School resigned on Monday, according to Superintendent Ric Frataccia.
Reid Amones, 43, was promoted to principal in 2012 after working as an assistant principal for two years.
“He wanted to pursue some personal and professional matters and to re-energize to do so,” Frataccia said.
Frataccia said Amones’ departure was not related to Valparaiso football coach Dave Coyle’s resignation nearly two weeks ago.
Coyle left the coaching position after some of the team’s seniors objected to his handling of a disciplinary situation involving a player. He continues to teach biology at the high school.
Assistant Principal Veronica Tobon stepped in as interim principal on Monday, Frataccia said. The district will advertise soon to replace Amones. Frataccia said he would provide additional assistance to the high school until a replacement is hired.
“Anything they need, advice as well as supervision,” he said.
Board member Karl Cender declined to comment. He said it would be unethical for a board member to comment on a personnel issue or student discipline matter.
Prior to Valparaiso, Amones worked as a principal at George Rogers Clark High School in Hammond and Willowcreek Middle School in Portage. He also taught mathematics and advanced placement classes at Portage High School.
He could not be immediately reached for comment on Monday.
