Elgin police said Thursday they are investigating a claim that a Walmart employee was trapped in a freezer in the store by a co-worker, who later was fired by the company.

A woman who works at Walmart, 1100 S. Randall Road, filed a police report at 11:23 a.m. Sunday, claiming two of her co-workers closed the door to the freezer, trapping her there for about five minutes earlier that morning, said Elgin Deputy Police Chief Bill Wolf. Another employee then freed her, according to her report, he said.

Police later determined it was one employee who closed the door to the freezer, Wolf said.

The woman was not injured, and police continue to investigate the incident, he said.

A Walmart spokesman said Thursday that the company declined to comment but confirmed that one employee has been fired in the incident.
