Before this current stretch, the last time the Cubs made the postseason three years in a row was 1906-08, winning the World Series in 1907 and 1908. So in the history of Chicago baseball, these three seasons are worth relishing and examining.
2015
Regular-season record: 97-65 (3rd place NL Central, won wild card spot)
Regular season
Entering the 2015 season, the Cubs had not posted a winning record since 2009. But the Cubs had signed free-agent pitcher Jon Lester and hired new manager Joe Maddon, and things looked to be turning around.
An excellent August propelled the Cubs into the middle of the wild-card race. Pitcher Jake Arrieta turned in one of the greatest second halves of a season in history. Kyle Schwarber came up to stay with the big-league club in July and hit 16 home runs in 232 at-bats.
The turnaround was dramatic. The Cubs finished with the third-best record in baseball, trailing only their division rivals in Pittsburgh and St. Louis.

- April 17
- The Cubs called Kris Bryant up from Triple-A Iowa to make his major-league debut against the Padres at Wrigley Field. He went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in a 5-4 loss but quickly showed he could be a perennial All-Star based on his power and athletic ability.
- May 11
- The opening of the renovated left-field bleachers brought back a cozy feeling for Cubs outfielders. It was one of the first significant projects to be completed in the massive ballpark renovation. Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo provided fireworks, hitting back-to-back homers in the first inning of a 4-3 victory against the Mets.
- May 16
- It was only the 36th game of the season, but $155 million free-agent addition Jon Lester outdueled Pirates ace Gerrit Cole in a 4-1 victory at Wrigley Field, helping extend the Cubs’ winning streak to six games.
- Aug. 7
- The Cubs had had enough of Starlin Castro’s inconsistent defense — and his lack of clutch hitting. So manager Joe Maddon moved rookie Addison Russell from second to shortstop, and the Cubs’ infield defense improved significantly.
- Aug. 30
- Jake Arrieta no-hit the Dodgers 11 days shy of the 50th anniversary of Sandy Koufax’s perfect game on the same Dodger Stadium mound. Arrieta struck out 12 and walked one in snapping the Cubs’ four-game losing streak, announcing to a national TV audience that he was a legit Cy Young candidate.

Regular season
Expectations were high for a young team that had seemingly overacheived in the 2015 postseason. But if the Cubs were feeling any pressure, it didn’t show early, as they raced to a 25-6 mark to open the season.
The team’s only hiccup was a bad stretch heading into the All-Star break, which coincided with leadoff hitter Dexter Fowler’s trip to the disabled list with a hamstring injury. But the Cubs made up the lost ground quickly with another excellent August.

Regular-season record: 92-70 (1st place NL Central)
Regular season
The defending World Series champions stumbled a bit out of the gate. An inconsistent first half of the season left the Cubs two games below .500 at the All-Star break, 5 1/2 games behind the surging Brewers.
But the Cubs put together a six-game winning streak coming out of the break, and by the end of July they had seized the top spot in the division, which they would never relinquish.
Notable additions
Acquired
- Alex Avila, catcher (traded from Tigers)
- Wade Davis, relief pitcher (traded from Royals)
- Brian Duensing, relief pitcher (free agency)
- Jon Jay, outfield (free agency)
- Jose Quintana, starting pitcher (traded from White Sox)
- Justin Wilson, relief pitcher (traded from Tigers)
Called up
- Ian Happ, outfield, second base
