A 16-year-old girl and a man have been charged in an accidental shooting that killed a 16-year-old girl Sunday night on the South Side.

The 16-year-old was charged with involuntary manslaughter, and Joshua Baker, 19, was charged with obstruction of justice for destroying evidence after the shooting, said Officer Michelle Tannehill, a Chicago police spokeswoman.

Eshunte Mayfield was accidentally shot and killed Sunday night in a home in the 6600 block of South Marquette Road.

It was not immediately clear what evidence Baker was charged with destroying.

Baker was inside the residence with Mayfield and another 16-year-old girl at the time of the shooting, police said.

The second girl was “handling a gun” that Baker had produced when it accidentally discharged around 7 p.m. and struck Mayfield in the face, according to police. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

An autopsy Monday determined Mayfield died of a gunshot wound to the head and her death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Detectives on the scene had initially said there were two males in the residence with the two girls involved in the shooting, but police later confirmed it was only Baker.

Baker, of the same block where the shooting occurred, was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
