Police called to the Lincoln Park Lagoon after a fisherman found a duffel bag with human remains inside found a second bag with more remains Saturday, police said.
Officers were called to the lagoon just before 11:10 a.m., when fishermen called 911 after finding a duffel bag filled with appeared to be human remains, police said. Marine Unit divers and detectives went to the scene and officials found a second bag with more remains, said Frank Giancamilli, a police spokesman. The remains were all believed to be from the same person, he said.
Detectives were conducting a death investigation and checking missing persons reports for any possible leads. The Cook County medical examiner’s office was leading the investigation into the cause and manner of death.
Crews were still searching the lagoon after 4 p.m.
At the scene, police gathered south of Fullerton Drive, at the Lincoln Park South Lagoon, east of Cannon Drive. Police cordoned off part of the area around the lagoon, as well as a parking lot west of it. At one point, police could be seen looking at a large black bag on the ground, west of the South Lagoon.
A few families visiting the zoo, some in Halloween costumes under their coats and jackets, stopped or slowed down to see what happened Saturday, though police officers at the scene did not provide any passersby with any information.
According to the zoo’s website, it is hosting “Spooky Zoo 2017” on Saturday. There was no immediate indication that the event, intended to “give children the opportunity to celebrate Halloween in a free, safe, and family-friendly environment,” had been cancelled as of late Saturday afternoon.
