A Cook County judge sentenced a Midlothian woman to 90 days in jail for yelling racial slurs and attacking a black couple at a South Side margarita festival, according to court records.

Jessica Sanders, who is white, also was sentenced to one year of probation on Tuesday, according to records. She had been found guilty of misdemeanor battery.

Authorities originally charged Sanders, 27, with felony hate crime and aggravated battery charges in her attack against Ernest and Cassie Crim, both teachers in Joliet Township High School District 204. An argument erupted over a game of bean bags between the three people on July 30, 2016, at the South Shore Cultural Center, authorities said.

Sanders also was accused of knocking the cell phone from Ernest Crim’s hand and spitting on Cassie Crim.

The incident was recorded by Ernest Crim on his cell phone and posted to one of his social media pages.

On Sept. 18, James B. Linn convicted Sanders of the lesser charge, saying her actions did not rise to the level of a felony.
