Two police officers were hurt while rescuing a person with disabilities from a fire that broke out Sunday morning in a house in Des Plaines, according to authorities.

Around 8:40 a.m., officers were called out to blaze a two-story house in the 300 block of South Westgate Road, near Mount Prospect and Golf roads, where two senior women were on the front porch as the back of the residence was engulfed in flames, police said. The officers were informed that a male with disabilities was still in the dwelling and rushed into the house to move him to safety.

The two officers were treated for smoke inhalation and other injuries, but none of the home’s occupants were hurt, police said.

Des Plaines firefighters, aided by neighboring fire departments, extinguished the fire. As of Sunday night, the cause of the fire remained under investigation.
