Chicago Fire general manager Nelson Rodriguez revealed Wednesday the club and star midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger will hold talks about the German’s future after the end of the current MLS season.
“I think we want to remain with our original plan to have our hard discussions at the end of the season,” Rodriguez told reporters at reporters at a media roundtable.
“The most that Basti and I have done is both say ‘hey this has gone pretty well'”
Rodriguez added he feels Schweinsteiger has enjoyed his time in and out of the Fire locker room.
“I don’t want to speak for Basti, but from what we’ve gleaned and what he’s shared with us, he and Ana (Ivanovic, his wife) are very comfortable in the city. They love it,” said Rodriguez.
“I think he’s really enjoyed the locker room, the guys, the support of the fans. I think he’s really taken to the challenge of Major League Soccer.”
Regarding the mutual option in the German’s contract, Rodriguez explained the objective is to draw from his first experience in MLS and Chicago before committing long term.
“We didn’t want either party to feel bound without having had the year of experience to draw on,” said Rodriguez.
“From our perspective the experience has been extraordinariliy positive. I think he’s delivered across all of our expectations, and we hope that we have delivered against his expectations.”
