The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services has opened an investigation into possible neglect after a 7-year-old girl was accidentally shot in the chest on the South Side over the weekend, leaving her in critical condition.

The agency said six other children were in the Calumet Heights home at East 91st Street and South Blackstone Avenue at the time of the incident, but could not confirm whether they were all siblings. The children are now being cared for by other relatives and friends “under a safety plan,” according to a DCFS spokesperson.

DCFS said it had no prior history with the family of the girl.

Police said the girl was shot around 3 p.m. Sunday when a gun “accidentally discharged.” She was struck in the chest and taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where her condition was stabilized, police said.

Investigators recovered a handgun from the home, police said. No charges have been filed as of Tuesday morning.
