Evanston police said they recovered a loaded handgun from a backpack a parolee was carrying, after the man ditched the backpack and his shoes when police pursued him.

As of Thursday morning, Devane Retreage, 33, of the 700 block of Wesely in Evanston, is being held on $150,000 bond in Cook County Jail, on multiple gun charges, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s office.

Retreage is charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a firearm/ammunition without a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card – all felonies – and misdemeanor possession of a firearm/ammunition without a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card.

Police officers responded Monday Oct. 9 to a call from a residence in the 1700 block of Hovland Court where the caller reported seeing a man with dread locks in a red hooded sweatshirt in possession of a handgun, Evanston police said in a news release Wednesday.

When they arrived on the scene, according to the release, police were not able to find the man. But officers stayed in the area and eventually saw a man who matched the description the caller provided and he also had a backpack, the release states.

The man, now identified as Retreage, ran from police, according to the release. But he was caught in the 1800 block of Lemar Avenue, and didn’t have the backpack and was not wearing shoes.

Police said they found his shoes and the backpack in a yard that Retreage ran through when he was running from officers, the release states.

The officers said they recovered a loaded Springfield Arms .45 caliber handgun from the backpack, as well as a second magazine for the handgun that contained .45 caliber ammunition, according to the release.

The release states that the Illinois Department of Corrections also issued a parole violation warrant for Retreage’s arrest since he was on parole when the alleged incident occurred.

Retreage is scheduled to appear in court again Oct. 18 in Skokie.
