A Gary man told police he meant to kill a man in a machete attack after warning him not to come over to his house, court documents said.

In a statement to Gary police, Tyrone D. Hammons said when the doorbell rang Saturday at his home in the 500 block of Kentucky Street in Gary, he hit the visitor in the head with a machete, the probable cause affidavit said. Hammons said he continued hitting the man with the machete and that the victim tried to fend off the blows, records said. When asked what his intentions were, Hammons said he was doing it to kill the man.

Hammons, 52, was charged in Lake Superior Court with attempted murder, aggravated battery and battery by means of a deadly weapon.

The victim told police that after being struck, he stumbled backwards and fell and that Hammons repeatedly hit him all over his body with the machete, documents said.

As Hammons was hitting the man, he told him, “I told you not to come over here or I am going to kill you,” court records said. The victim said he’s known Hammons about 40 years, documents said.

The man received a large gash on his head, several cuts on his legs and an injury to his right hand in which his thumb was nearly severed, records said. He spoke to police in the emergency room at Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary.

On the way to the Gary police department lockup, Hammons told the officer who was driving him that he hoped the man dies and that he’d warned him that next time he saw him he was going to kill him, records said. When the officer arrived at the scene, he saw Hammons swing the machete while standing over the victim, who was covered in blood, records said.

Hammons is being held on $100,000 bail. He also has a pending aggravated battery case stemming from an incident reported on Sept. 30 in Gary.
