The beer: Tart n’ Juicy Sour IPA by Epic Brewing

What it is: A gimmick? Visionary? The future? I’m not sure. But Tart n’ Juicy combines two of craft beer’s most popular motifs in recent years — hoppy and sour — to create a sour IPA. The beer is made tart by a process called kettle souring (the fast, cheap way to sour a beer) and then given an abundance of citrus-forward hops. This beer has a lofty aim and mostly nails it. Better still, its alcohol content is less than a Budweiser.

In the can: The deep amber beer nicely approximated the aroma of what a tart IPA should be — it’s a cross between tart grapefruit and grassiness, with mild touches of perfume and honey. On the palate, the beer is heavily grapefruit-forward and almost reminiscent of juice. But whereas many juicelike IPAs veer toward too much sweetness, Tart n’ Juicy, as you might expect, veers toward tartness (the best kind of grapefruit juice), bathed in floral softness. It cannot be stated strongly enough: This beer needs to be enjoyed significantly warmer than straight out of the refrigerator for its depth — and those hops — to come through. About 50 degrees, at least.

Alcohol: 4.5 percent

Drink it with: Both tart and fruity beers can offer a nice counterpoint to food, and that’s true of this beer. The recommendation here is to pair Tart n’ Juicy with shrimp, in whatever form you choose.

Find it: Available year-round in six-packs of 12-ounce cans.
