Two Chicago-area athletes have been recognized for their training regimens. Sports Illustrated named Algonquin native and Olympic steeplechase silver medalist Evan Jager and Red Stars midfielder Julie Ertz to its “Most Fit Athletes” list.
SI selected athletes from around the world and graded them on physical benchmarks and performance within the last year.
Notably, Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta, a workout and dietary demon, didn’t make the cut.
Jager ranked 25th, and SI wrote, “In a 3,000-meter event that not only requires superior endurance but also the ability to jump over obstacles, Jager’s 6’2” frame and golden flowing locks clear hurdles and water jumps with grace. “
On 14th-ranked Ertz: “An Arizona native and Santa Clara University alum, Ertz (née Johnston) is a hardcore defender who typically combines mobility work, soccer training sessions, weightlifting and Pilates — all on the same day. The 25-year-old will also team up with husband and Eagles tight end Zach for workouts, from standard gym sessions to MMA and more.”
Other female athletes with Illinois or Chicago-area ties also made the list, including Danica Patrick, Tatyana McFadden and Candace Parker.

SI also ranks Elena Delle Donne as No. 50, but identifies her as a Chicago Sky player. She was traded to the Washington Mystics in February.
