player ready...Two floors of the downtown parking garage in La Grange will be closed for a week in October while some of the driving surfaces are restored.
Public works director Ryan Gillingham said it has not yet been determined what week the lower floors of the three-level garage at 80 S. 6th Ave., will be closed.
The village needs to restore a protective coating on the driving surfaces that is showing signs of wear in the 376-space garage built in 2005.
The drive lanes in the first and second floors, particularly the turn lanes, are showing wear and tear.
“The coating is 12 years old and it’s worn out in some sections,” Gillingham said.
The village has awarded a contract J. Gill and Co. to do the work at a cost of $39,500. The total cost of the project, including engineering and planning costs, is $44,500.
Gillingham said the fall was selected as the time to do the work because it will not interfere with summer festivals and other events.
He said parking will be available on the street and in other municipal lots while the two levels of the garage are closed.
In a memo to the board, village manager Andrianna Peterson said the work was recommended by a firm that specializes in restoring parking garages. The village contracted in 2015 with the firm to inspect the garage and make recommendations on repairs.
Other work included recoating the top deck of the garage with a new water proof membrane, removing the existing expansive joints and replacing them, and replacing the existing handrail bases which were deteriorated.
Those improvements were completed in 2015 at a cost of $122,000.
