A Jeffery Manor man shot another man who lived in the area after they had what was described as a “neighbor dispute,” prosecutors said Tuesday.
Delton Bates, 42, of the 9700 block of South Merrion Avenue, was ordered held without bail Tuesday in the killing Saturday night of Darrius Buckley, 33, in front of Bates’ home, according to prosecutors and court records. Buckley was shot about 8:50 p.m. Saturday, according to police.
Buckley, of the 9600 block of South Brennan Avenue–about a block from Bates’ home–went to Bates’ home Saturday night about 8:40 and got into an argument with Bates over “neighbor dispute,” said Tandra Simonton, a spokeswoman for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.
Prosecutors didn’t elaborate on the origins of the dispute.
At some point, Buckley turned away and started to walk down a driveway, and Bates took out a gun and shot Buckley in the back of the head, prosecutors said. Witnesses saw Bates standing over Buckley’s body with the gun.
Police arrived soon after, and three witnesses identified Bates as the man who had shot Buckley. Bates was arrested on his block just before 9 p.m. after he was identified as the man who shot Buckley, police said.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office determined Buckley died from a gunshot wound to the head.
Bates has six prior felony convictions, dating back to a 1993 drug case for which he received two years probation, and including a 1997 aggravated battery of a police officer case, for which he was sentenced to two years in prison, according to prosecutors and court records.
At the time of his arrest, Bates was free on bond following a May 21 domestic battery incident at his home, according to records. He was due back in court on that case on Friday.
