Accused of running over a man’s foot with his car and pushing down a woman during a domestic dispute, 41-year-old Michael Cole remains in Kane County Jail on $100,000 bail after a judge denied a request to lower that amount, according to court documents.
Cole, of Elgin, is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, leaving the scene of an injury accident, domestic battery, resisting a peace officer and child endangerment in connection to the Aug. 1 incident in South Elgin. Prosecutors allege Cole knocked a woman to the ground as she held a five-year-old child, causing her to drop the child. Cole at some point drove away at a “high rate of speed,” with the child not secured in a safety seat, running over the man’s foot in the process. Cole later struggled with a South Elgin police officer who attempted to handcuff him, according to charging documents.
Cole’s attorney contended in a bond reduction motion that the $100,000 bail was a “hardship” because Cole could not return to his job to raise the money needed to be released from jail. Judge Linda Abrahamson rejected the request during a Sept. 7 hearing.
Cole, who has made a speedy trial demand, is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 20.
