Urban Meyer did something football coaches never do: Lace into other coaches.

In a stunning piece by CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd, Meyer lit up Tom Herman, the Texas coach groomed for head-coaching jobs by none other than Meyer.

After 18-point favorite Texas lost at home to Maryland, Herman said this: “If we all thought that we were going to come in here and in nine months sprinkle some fairy dust on this team and think that we’ve arrived, then we’re wrong.”

Meyer’s reply to CBS Sports: “C’mon man. I don’t know where that came from. It’s like a new generation of excuse. [Herman] said, ‘I can’t rub pixie dust on this thing.’ He got a dose of reality. Maryland just scored 51 points on you.”

And of coaches not taking accountability, Meyer said “Players read that.”

It’s apparently a sensitive topic for Meyer, whose player arrest record at Florida got almost as much attention as his two national titles.

After Will Muschamp took over in Gainesville, he told CBS Sports, “[We] changed the culture of the program that was labeled by the previous head coach [Meyer] as ‘broken.’ He said it. I didn’t.”

Meyer took over Ohio State from Jim Tressel/Luke Fickell in 2012. Despite the program having been penalized by the NCAA, Meyer went 12-0 with their players.
