A former Lake County police officer who admitted he attacked a woman in his home nearly two years ago was sentenced to five years for battery resulting in serious bodily injury.
Jon Breitweiser was sentenced to two years in Lake County Community Corrections’ day-reporting program, which is similar to house arrest, and three years on probation.
In court nearly three months ago, Breitweiser admitted he asked the woman to come to his Highland home to pick up photo albums he had, led her to the basement and then attacked her and hit her in the face.
Deputy prosecutor Infinity Baulos said Breitweiser as a history of alcoholism and violent outbursts and pointed out that his mental issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder and bipolar disorder, came to light after charges of rape, criminal confinement, strangulation and domestic battery were filed in November 2015.
Breitweiser, 43, received 18 commendations while he was an officer.
Breitweiser apologized to the victim and expressed shame and sorrow for his actions.
