The beer: Wee Mac Scottish-style Ale, Sun King Brewing (Indianapolis)

What it is: A throwback. One of Sun King’s three core beers (the others are an easy-drinking cream ale and a pale ale), Wee Mac is a Scottish ale — dark brown, approachable and malt-forward. It may not ring a bell for the crowd all-in on IPA (and especially hazy IPA), but Wee Mac threads an easy-drinking needle for everyone else. Founded in 2009, Sun King was put on the map in 2011 with a stunning eight medals at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. As of mid-August, it is finally distributed in Chicago.

In the can: Whoever wrote the text on the Wee Mac can nailed the description: “Wee Mac Scottish-style ale is an enticing and malty brown ale with caramel, cocoa and hazelnut character balanced with toffee undertones.” Well said, Wee Mac can. Well said. I also get a touch of savory spice — a little cinnamon perhaps. Unlike some malt-forward beers, Wee Mac’s body is on the thinner side but still manages to land with faint mouth-coating richness. It’s an ideal and approachable beer to usher us into autumn.

Alcohol: 5.3 percent

Drink it with: Malty brown beers tend to be friendly to heartier foods, and Wee Mac is no exception, from a burger to chicken tacos.

Find it: Available in six-packs of 12-ounce cans at better beer stores.
