Among the 180 artists scheduled to exhibit at the 63rd annual Art Fair on the Square is a photographer who creates kinetic and animated art, an artist who assembles necklaces using seeds and bones and an artist who creates hand-dyed and painted clothing.
More than 400 artists applied to take part in Art Fair on the Square, which is organized by the Deer Path Art League, said Pamela Payton, who along with Jillian Chapman is co-chairing the event.
The applicants were then considered by a jury of three art professionals who change every year.
“Literally, people have been visiting Art Fair on the Square their entire lives,” Payton said.
Deer Path Art League has a year-round committee that works exclusively on organizing the fair. They bring in lots of volunteers, particularly from Lake Forest High School, Payton said.
Volunteers measure off booth space the night before and arrive at Market Square by 3:30 a.m. to check in the artists.
The Deer Path Art League started in 1954 and Art Fair on the Square in 1955. The first fair featured 25 invited artists and another 50 who were members of Deer Path Art League, according to the organization’s website.
The types of art being exhibited this year include ceramics, digital art, drawing/pastel, fiber, glass, graphics/printmaking, non-precious and precious jewelry, mixed media, paintings in acrylic, oil or watercolor, photography, sculpture and wood.
Art Fair on the Square will take place at Market Square in Lake Forest on Sept. 3-4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entrance is free.
