A Cook County Jail inmate who prosecutors say attacked his cellmate last month while the man slept is now facing attempted murder charges, prosecutors said Sunday.
Walter Adams, 35, was ordered held without bail on suspicion of punching and kicking his cellmate in the head July 27.
The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital for treatment and is unable to communicate verbally, according to Assistant State’s Attorney Julia Ramirez.
“It is unclear if he will ever speak again,” Ramirez said in court.
Adams, of the 5800 block of South Ada Street, was charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery Thursday. He appeared before Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. for a bond hearing Sunday at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.
Adams originally was being held in connection with the felony aggravated battery of a nurse, which took place at a hospital in the 7500 block of South Stony Island Avenue about 7:20 p.m. May 7, according to police and court records. Jackson Park Hospital is in that block.
Adams was arrested on an unrelated warrant May 11 but apparently was allowed to be free on bail. He was arrested again at his home on Ada Street on June 15 on charges of violating bond and criminal damage to government property. While he was in jail on those charges, he was charged July 10 in the hospital incident, according to records.
