The La Grange Police Department is reporting that 16 unlocked vehicles were entered over a few days.

The incidents occurred on residential streets Tuesdayand Wednesday in the 0-800 block of Waiola Avenue, the 300 block of Spring Avenue, and the 500 and 700 blocks of Stove Avenue, said acting police chief Andrew Peters. .

“It was a pretty wide area. They were moving through town,” Peters said.

He said the vehicles were ransacked and items such as electronics and cash were taken.

He said it appeared that the offenders were primarily trying to locate keys to steal vehicles. In one case, it appeared a key was located and there was an attempt to steal a vehicle. He said the theft failed because another car was parked behind it.

Peters is urging residents to be vigilant about locking their cars.

“We want to send the message they everyone should lock their cars,” he said.

Police urge residents to keep all vehicle doors, windows and sun roofs closed and locked at all times, not leave keys inside the vehicles and remove items of value.
