A 17-year-old boy was fatally shot late Tuesday while playing basketball in suburban Cicero, according to officials.

Irving Estrada was in the 1600 block of South 56th Court about 8 p.m. Tuesday when someone approached him and his friends and opened fire, according to Cicero officials.

The teen was struck in the abdomen and was pronounced dead at 9:08 p.m.

No one was reported in custody.

Estrada lived in the 3700 block of South 61st Court in Cicero, less than three miles from where he was shot, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Friends and family placed religious candles and mementos on the basketball court Wednesday night. A somber crowd gathered around the boy’s parents.

One of the teen’s friends told WGN-TV that Estrada was a funny person who was liked by everyone.

“No one really had any problems with him,” the friend said. “He was like one of my brothers, to be honest, and we hung out every day. And to see this happen to him, that’s like, it’s heartbreaking.”

Anyone with information about the shooting can contact Cicero police at 708-652-2130.
