Taimy Alvarez / Sun SentinelThe Dolphins are searching for a starting left guard because of Ted Larsen's biceps injury, which will sideline him for at least half the season, and Steen (pictured at left), who started seven games at center last season, appears to be the front runner. The three-year starter at the University of Alabama needs to prove he can open up running lanes to hold off Kraig Urbik and all of Miami's other options.

Taimy Alvarez / Sun SentinelCutler, who came out of retirement to join the Dolphins on Aug. 7, has a decent grasp of Miami's offense, but he struggled in his first full week of practice. Cutler, who has an 85.7 passer rating in his 11 seasons, needs time to get comfortable with the speed of the game, and his new weapons. Don't be surprised if he's behind center for two offensive series, and throws a lot of conservative passes.

Jay Cutler, the Miami Dolphins’ new quarterback, is being patient with his learning curve. He knows he’s making progress. It’s just no one is sure how quickly Cutler should be progressing.
On Sunday, his third practice with the team, Cutler said things slowed down, and the strong-armed 34 year old had a good day with his mechanics and running coach Adam Gase’s offense.
Compare that to Saturday when Cutler had a beautifully-thrown 30-yard touchdown to receiver DeVante Parker, but also had two end zone interceptions. Cutler, who had Gase as his offensive coordinator in Chicago in 2015, said things were moving fast, and he seemed to struggle.
“[Saturday], he was excited to get out there,” Gase said. “[Sunday], it kind of calmed down for him.”
This isn’t a question of knowledge.
“He has the offense down pretty good,” said Gase. “He’s a quick study.”
For Cutler, this is more a question of getting comfortable. Cutler said the experience of coming out of retirement to become a starting quarterback was overwhelming initially.
“The first couple of days, I think it was,” he said. “You meet all of these new people. Coming from a place you’ve been for eight years, you kind of know everybody. There’s a new influx of people from year to year, but for the majority, you know everybody.
“Coming here the first couple of days, they’re a whirlwind,” Cutler said of his first few days with the Dolphins. “It’s just what it’s going to be. You just have to get used to it, like any other new experience. The longer you’re in it, the easier it is.
“It feels like I’ve been here for two weeks. I don’t think I’ve even been here a week yet. So I don’t know if it’s going fast or slow, but it’s going.”
Not attending organized team activities or minicamp is an unfamiliar position for Cutler, an 11-year veteran.
To that end, Gase, and quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree, are always available if a question arises.
“We do FaceTime,” Cutler said. “I get out of here at a reasonable hour so I can get home and rest up. But we FaceTime late into the night if something pops up or if I’m not sure about something, he’s always right there and he’ll explain it. Bo is the same way. It’s a group that communicates really well.”
Publicly, there’s no timetable for Cutler to get to know the offense and his teammates, including Thursday’s upcoming game against Baltimore at Hard Rock Stadium. Cutler, who didn’t play in the preseason opener against Atlanta, isn’t sure how much he’ll play against the Ravens.
“Whatever Adam wants,” Cutler said. “We’ll talk to Adam. We’ve got a few more days until we get there. [We’ll] see how everyone else is feeling, see how the [offensive] line’s feeling and we’ll make a decision whenever we feel good about it.”
Cutler also isn’t sure how long it will take to acquaint himself with his receivers.
“It could be three weeks, it could be three days, I don’t know,” he said. “It’s just kind of when it clicks, it clicks.
“It’s like whenever you meet somebody new, right off the bat there’s a spark, or sometimes it might take a little bit longer or it just doesn’t happen. But with these guys, it’s going to happen. These guys are good football players, they’re fun to be around. It’s an enjoyable process.”
Cutler said he’s looking forward to playing in his first preseason game.

“Just being behind some of these guys and missing most of training camp, missing OTAs, I think it’s important for me to get some valuable reps out there, feel good and get some positive stuff on tape with some of these guys,” he said.
But the bottom line, it seems, is Cutler is making progress, day by day.
“[Sunday] felt, I told Adam, it felt a lot better,” Cutler said. “Everything was slowed down. I felt a lot more comfortable, I was moving in the pocket. It’s just going to take playing football to really get to where I feel really comfortable.”
