Fire officials aren’t aware of any defects with a rodent smoke bomb that started a house fire Monday night on Aurora’s Near East Side, said Aurora Fire Department spokesman Capt. Jim Rhodes.

Firefighters responded at about 9:26 p.m. Monday to a single-story home on the 2400 block of Blue Spruce Lane after the homeowner called to report the fire, according to a news release from the fire department.

A rodent smoke bomb the homeowner had used near the exterior of his house caused it to catch fire, according to the news release.

Fire crews arrived to light smoke showing from the house and had the flames out within about 10 minutes, with no reported injuries to civilians or any of the 13 firefighters involved, according to the fire department.

Fire officials estimated about $10,000 in damage and said the house is still habitable.

Rhodes said people should be mindful when using rodent smoke bombs in light of what happened.

“I’m sure if people follow the directions they should be fine,” Rhodes said in an email.
