A Chicago firefighter was injured as crews battled an extra-alarm fire that destroyed a Northwest Side factory building in the Irving Park neighborhood early Friday, officials said.

The firefighter suffered a back injury and was taken to a hospital.

The fire started around 4 a.m. at Horizon Metals, 3925 N. Pulaski Road, just north of the Kennedy Expressway, fire officials said. As the fire was raised to a 3-11 alarm, a propane tank inside the factory exploded and the roof collapsed.

Firefighters experienced problems with fire hydrants and had to bring hoses through a house next door.

The fire was under control by 6:45 a.m. The cause is under investigation.
