The Blackhawks kept one of their young defenseman in the fold for next season as they re-signed Erik Gustafsson to a one-year deal.

Gustafsson was a restricted free agent who saw time with the Hawks two seasons ago when he played in 41 regular-season games. Last season, Gustafsson didn’t play in an NHL game.

Gustafsson played in 68 games with Rockford last season and registered 30 points, which led all defensemen.

He re-joins a Hawks defensive unit that will be heavy on youth and short on experience next season. The only two returning defensemen who played the majority of minutes in the Hawks’ playoff loss to the Predators are Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook.
