Police arrested a Gary man after they allegedly saw him standing along a Borman Expressway exit ramp shooting at passing cars.

When officers arrived July 5 at Central Avenue near the Interstate 80-94 exit ramp in Gary, they saw a man standing along the roadway with what appeared to be a handgun at his side, the probable cause affidavit said. The man raised his left arm, pointed the gun toward the road and fired two shots while cars were driving by, records said.

One of the officers got an assault rifle from his car and ordered the man, identified as Byron Taylor Matthews, 36, to drop his weapon, according to records. Matthews complied, but when another officer tried to handcuff him, he began to fight, pull away and kick until officers were able to handcuff him and place him in leg shackles, records said.

Police found a .44-caliber handgun with two live rounds and three spent rounds of ammunition in the cylinder, records said. Inside Matthews’ right front shorts pocket was a “speed loader” with five live rounds of ammunition for the revolver, records said.

Matthews was charged in Lake Superior Court with attempted aggravated battery, attempted battery by means of a deadly weapon, attempted criminal recklessness, pointing a firearm and misdemeanor resisting law enforcement. The most serious of the charges is punishable by three to 16 years.
