A Dolton firefighter died while fighting a fire Saturday afternoon in south suburban Harvey, officials said.
Harvey firefighters responded to a fire call around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, and called in the Dolton Fire Department for help, Harvey spokesman Sean Howard told WGN-TV. The fire was in multiple mobile homes, according to the Harvey Fire Department’s Facebook page.
After the Dolton firefighters arrived at the scene, one of them collapsed and went into cardiac arrest, Howard said. He was taken unresponsive to Ingalls Memorial Hospital, and later pronounced dead.
The man who died after the incident in the 15000 block of Maplewood in Harvey was identified as Lawrence Matthews, 35, of Glenwood, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Matthews was pronounced dead at 3:15 p.m. at Ingalls Memorial Hospital, according to the office.
The Harvey Fire Department posted photos of the fire on the department’s Facebook page, and asked in a Facebook message that people “Please keep the family, friends, and the members of the Dolton Fire (Department) in your prayers.”
