A Kane County judge has denied a request to allow St. Charles attempted murder suspect Scott Turyna to visit a gun range and fire a gun to help prepare his defense for an upcoming trial, court records show.

Judge D.J. Tegeler rejected the motion seeking to modify 66-year-old Turyna’s bond so that he could go to the range with an expert “to have a certain skill set evaluated.”

Turyna’s attorney, Robert Motta, indicated in court filings that the request was related to the fact prosecutors allege Turyna fired gunshots at his wife during a May 2016 domestic dispute in their St. Charles subdivision.

Turyna has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and aggravated domestic battery charges, which accuse him of beating his then-wife inside their home and then firing at least five gunshots in her direction after she fled the residence.

The couple had been married for 26 years until a judge granted a divorce — sought by Turyna’s wife shortly after the shooting — in February.

During the hearing, Tegeler also rescheduled Turyna’s trial for October and ordered Motta to disclose information on expert witnesses within the next 45 days.

Turyna, who now lives in Elburn, is free on $1 million bail with restrictions that prohibit him from being within a certain distance of his ex-wife.
