On Tuesday afternoon, a judge denied bail for a convicted felon on parole for battery in the shooting of a Chicago police officer over the weekend.

Dashonn Maggette, 32, was charged with the attempted murder of a Chicago police officer after a weekend scuffle that turned into a shooting in East Chatham neighborhood, officials said.

During Tuesday’s hearing at the Leighton Criminal Court Building, Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr.denied bail for Maggette, who remained hospitalized.

Maggette, from the 7700 block of South Prairie Avenue, was in critical condition at Stroger Hospital with gunshot wounds to his right arm and body from the conflict Saturday night, according to police.

He was also charged with two counts of aggravated battery with one the discharge of a firearm at a police officer and the other causing bodily harm to a police officer, police said.

On Saturday at about 11:10 p.m., two officers part of the Summer Mobile Unit were driving near the 8100 block of South Maryland Avenue when they spotted Maggette drinking alcohol on a public sidewalk, police said. When the officers approached Maggette, he ran into an apartment located in the same block, according to prosecutors.

As Maggette ran up multiple flights of stairs, two officers chased him. When Maggette reached the top he could not find an exit, so he ran back down toward the officers, prosecutors said.

As Maggette approched, one officer saw his hand “in front of his waistband,” which contained a 9mm handgun belonging to him, Asst. State’s Atty. Joseph Carlson said in court.

When the officer tried to disarm Maggette, Maggette took his gun and shot the officer in the hand, officials said.

The other officer, who was not injured, fired three shots at Maggette hitting him in his arm and body, according to Carlson.

Maggette then jumped on the back of the officer who shot him and tried to tackle him in the building’s vestibule, Carlson said.

Maggette ran out of the building where the uninjured officer chased him down a block and into another building before the officer was able to hold him until more officers got there, prosecutors said.

The injured officer was immediately taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for surgery because the bones in his hands shattered, officials said. The wounded officer, whose name has not been released, has a stabilized condition, but police said they expect more surgeries in the future.

As customary for all officer-involved shootings, The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the weekend shooting, and the officers will be placed on administrative duty for 30 days.
