The Lake Forest District 67 Board of Education approved $313,500 for a playground and drainage project at Sheridan Elementary on May 23.
A new playground will be installed over the summer to replace the 21-year-old playground, Principal Michelle Shinn said.
“It’s just old,” Shinn said. “Some of it is not ADA compliant.”
The Spirit of 67 Foundation is providing $88,000 toward the project, Board Member Suzanne Sands said.
“It’s a major investment,” Shinn said. “We’re really excited.”
About $100,000 of the project will go to drainage improvements, said Jennifer Hermes, assistant superintendent of business services.
The school building is on a slight hill, and the west border of the property is 12 feet higher than the school building, Shinn said. John Keno and Company Inc., which was awarded the project, will make improvements so rainwater flows around the school building rather than into it, she said.
The contractor will also replace wood chips with a rubber surface and replace some asphalt with grass, Shinn said.
This district will pay for the project with general operating funds, Hermes said.
