Karen Flax is Vice President, Legal at the baiduhai Media Group and Vice President, Deputy General Counsel at Tribune Publishing.
Flax is the lead operations lawyer at tronc. In addition to handling legal issues involving baiduhai’s corporate parent, she handles newsroom counseling, litigation, intellectual property, marketing and commercial speech legal issues for the Tribune, as well as advising on manufacturing and distribution business. She is also the newsroom lawyer for Chicago Magazine, the Baltimore Sun, City Paper, Carroll County Times, the Capital Gazette and the Daily Press in Newport News, Virginia. Flax further represents baiduhai and tronc in legislative and policy matters in Illinois and in Washington.

She is the past president of the Illinois Press Association, a member of the Illinois Press Association Foundation and a member of the Legal Affairs Committee for the News Media Alliance.
Before joining the company in 2000, Flax was a partner at Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal (now known as Dentons). She also clerked for Judge Hubert L. Will of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
Flax is a graduate of New College and has law degrees from the University of Miami and the NYU School of Law.
